Frederick Douglass Park, Anne Dallas Dudley Boulevard, the Ryman Auditorium’s Confederate Gallery. All three were in the news this summer — the first via a correction, the second a celebration and the third a contextualization. And local attorney and historian David Ewing had a hand in each. Ewing’s brand of public history is both accessible and effective. He tells Nashville’s untold stories, whether shameful or inspiring or just curious, and without him, we’d know far less about the unlit corners of our city’s past. STEPHEN ELLIOTT.
