Learn about Nashville’s most famous African American street and neighborhood where the Civil Rights movement was organized, three of the most famous African American colleges Fisk university, Meharry Medical College and Tennessee State University are located. This is where some of the most famous African Americans including Oprah Winfrey, Congressman John Lewis, Diane Nash and NAACP founder W.E.B. DuBois. This area was home to many African American clubs where Jimi Hendrix, Ray Charles, Little Richard, James Brown and other performed. Today the street is still home to Citizen’s Bank the oldest continuously African American bank in the U.S. which is facing new developments.
